What is a Missional Community?

Missional communities are the primary way we connect with others and live our lives together on mission at Project Church. These smaller groups of people provide an opportunity to know others and be known within our community. Through these relationships, we mutually challenge and encourage one another to live the lives we are meant to live as followers of Christ.

Each missional community identifies their unique mission and meets regularly to eat, learn, pray, share, party, and be together on mission, living out the Gospel in real and tangible expressions.

While our Sunday gatherings are important, missional communities are the heartbeat of our church and are the vehicle for most of the church’s ministry. It is our desire that everyone would be a part of a missional community wherever they are on their spiritual journey.

When do Missional Communities meet?

For the summer, we are combining missional communities!

We are meeting On Thursdays at 6:30pm at Alternative Fuel Coffee House in downtown Rapid City. From there we will connect and then make our way to the Summer Nights festival to be among our community. If you’d like to join us, just show up.

In the fall, we will resume our normal missional community schedule.

The last Wednesday of each month at 7pm at Sanford's in downtown Rapid City.

When: The last Wednesday of each month at 7pm

Where: Sanford’s Grub & Pub (306 7th St. Downtown Rapid City)

Beer & Bible is a casual conversation where folks inside and outside our church can connect and discuss current hot topics and theology around a frosty beverage.

We typically have one big question to explore that guide our time.

Previous Topics Include:
What does the Bible say about alcohol?
What makes a word a bad word?
How should a Christian approach Halloween?
Can a Christian lose their salvation?
Does God send natural disasters as punishment?

Guidelines
We have just a few ground rules to guide our time:
1) Keep it real (Honesty reigns)
2) Keep it cordial (Respect one another’s opinions / Don’t be a jerk)
3) Control your drinking (Don’t get hammered)

Why Do This?
The idea is to allow people to think through life, culture, theology, etc. through a biblical lens. Sometimes people will answer the one big question with opinions. Then, as we look at the scriptures, we sometimes see that the Bible contradicts us (that’s a good thing), and we learn to live in light of what the scriptures say.

Also, understand that folks are coming from different places. Some don’t believe. Some are exploring. Some are trying to live out what they believe. This be a safe zone to doubt and ask questions. Wherever you are on your faith journey, you are welcome with us.

Resources
If you want to learn more about what the scriptures teach on alcohol, check out these books:

God Gave Wine (Gentry)

Drinking with Calvin and Luther! (West)

Our Position on Alcohol
In short, we believe the scriptures teach that believers are free to drink in moderation to the glory of God and the good of others. We are to keep self-control at all times and have the following guardrails:

Don’t make it your god

Don’t get drunk

Be of legal drinking age

And in all things, love others

Scripture
Deuteronomy 14:26
Psalm 104:14-15
John 2:1-11
Matthew 11:19
Isaiah 25:6-9

“God does not forbid you to drink…he permits you to drink wine and beer: he does not make a law of it. But do not make a pig of yourself; remain a human being. If you are a human being, then keep your human self-control.” – Martin Luther

Project Church gives away half our offering to be good news to the poor, fight human trafficking, & help start start new churches. Find out how you can help!

In Luke 4:18-19, Jesus read these words about himself. Words that echo to us today and inspire us to be more like him.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

At Project Church, we give away half our offering to be good news to the poor, join the fight against human trafficking & sex slavery around the world, and help start gospel-driven churches.

GOOD NEWS TO THE POOR
In our city and in our world, there are so many needs. People hungry, thirsty, enslaved, needing shelter, lacking essentials, and suffering from disease and malnutrition.

We’re committed to helping. The needs are vast, and we know we can’t change every story, but we can change some. And some are better than none.

From serving at schools, to raising funds for our local women and children’s shelter, to assisting with relief efforts in Haiti, we want to live out what we believe.

FREEDOM FOR THE ENSLAVED
Freedom comes in many forms. So does slavery. We are committed to helping people live free in many ways however, one particular cause has broken our hearts: human trafficking and sex slavery. With two children sold every minute with an estimated 27 million souls crying out for freedom, we must do something!

This is why we’re partnering with causes dedicated to ending human trafficking around the world.

START NEW CHURCHES
We believe the most effective way to join God in his mission in the world is through starting fresh expressions of gospel-driven churches.

The gospel of grace found in Jesus is the greatest news to ever hit humanity. Our love for him compels us to love others and join together in communities of faith to become more like Jesus.

There’s no greater cause than the gospel and no better vehicle than through local churches who are on mission.

Please consider investing in what Project Church is doing both locally and around the world. It’s only possible with the generosity of people like you.

Giving half our offering away is a huge leap of faith for our new church and we’re trusting that God will provide for all of our needs. Following him is one grand adventure and we’re just getting started. Partner with us!
